    Duncan - I think you will find the graph shows privatisation has created the renaissance of the British Rail Network and passenger numbers are in fact rising.

    Ahhh - but you are conflating correlation with cause. The under investment in roads has forced people on to trains if you adjusted the graph to reflect this it would in fact show a steep decline in numbers.

    Duncan - you can spin the numbers any way you like. All I know is I can't get a direct line from Liverpool to Hull anymore and so no one is travelling that route. Hence a big decline.

    No rail passengers before 1830? I suppose there were but they just didn't keep records then.
