Good news for the bigger agencies I suppose but outsourcing overseas is crippling the smaller ones.

    Or maybe I'm wrong - what's your view? :)

It's very true that the $10 design hookers are taking a lot of work, I've had the same discussion as probably many of the designers here have had with potential customers about "getting what they pay for". Of course, from a customers perspective I could just be trying to get their sales.

I have however had a few customers that have been to the (insert inappropriate language here) outsourcers, and been stung. They only lost a small amount each, but it was enough to show them that there's no point trying to chase an international phone number that never gets answered.

    Hello

It is not something that has affected my company to date as the majority of my clients are referals but I certainly seem to get bombarded daily by design companies in India offering their services.
I have had a few cold calls too .... I tend to go silent and disappear! then I do not need to get annoyed!

I have been offered programming services for $10 / $15 per hour but prefer to use a UK specialist company - they may cost me more (£50 per hr + vat) but I get the support and level of service that I need and also that I can understand!!

    It's not just design

I get pestered by companies from India offering really cheap bookkeeping and accounts preparation rates. They get offended if I try to probe their qualifications and experience - cos they don't have either - just mountains of cheap labour and "anyone can do bookkeeping and a/c's can't they" quoted one.

If they persist, my telephone provider has a really cool service. I just transfer the call to extension 166 and they hear an endless message saying how long they will be kept on hold!

It works for other cold callers as well - sorry to the chap on here who specializes in cold calling - but I hate being a victim of it and I would never do it as a strategy.

It's certainly clear that outsourcing overseas, in general, has only one advantage; cost. But at what cost?...

    Pros and Cons

We hate the idea of overseas so called designers charging ridiculous rates, and we all spit our coffee at the screen when we see god damn awful design work. It has hit UK freelancers hard, and I hazard a guess that many agencies use overseas contacts for subbing out. If you are here to make money, the shrewd business man will outsource and charge a premium to rake in the cash.

The UK Print industry may die in the next few years - which would be a very bad thing. I used a Polish print company recently - the work was superbly handled and the quality of the print was great. The price was one third that of the nearest UK Quote! I felt pretty bad about it, as I have some good friends in the print industry here, but they simply can't compete. Ill be certainly be using the company again in the future.

I am the eternal optimist though, and there are plenty of businesses out there that want local (i.e UK) creative expertise and are willing to pay for it. I angle my business as a quality and professional practice, and my rates deter hagglers and cheapskates.

The global economy can be a force for bad and good in equal measure.

In the course of my business I outsource a large amount of coding, programming and website building. I use a UK company, because:

    1. their cost structure is transparent.
    2. I can go and see them throughout the projects, occasionally quite large
    3. I dont find them particularly expensive anyway
    4. Their quality is awesome.

As tougher times come, I shall stick with them. They have a good track record of delivering for me.

Good for them! We wouldn't dream of off-shoring on principle.
