What will they do with the fines?

Money on it's not going to improving the conditions of the roads.

I agree, it's about time. It's also about time they raised the fine when driving and talking on the phone as loads of people do it without paying any attention to the roads.

Texting is even worse. I've seen so many people sitting at traffic lights texting away!

The worse case of this I saw was a policeman in his police car blatantly writing/sending a text while driving.

I think this is going to be a tricky one to police - how long can you be in the lane before you have to move? On the M25 you stay in lane for miles - does this count? Is it a subjective judgement and on what grounds?

I think it's more a case of the annoying twit who sits doing 65 in the middle lane with nobody on the left side of him.

I must admit, nothing makes me more angrier than driving along and seeing someone on the phone, especially the motorway. With absolutely no concentration on the road, can't get anymore dangerous.

There are only two types of drivers on the roads...

1/ Idiots: Those who drive slower than me.
2/ Maniacs: Those who drive faster than me :D

I will pick up the point made by CJD.

As far as alleged lane hogging element is concerned, I have made my views well known on UKBL previously.

Having acted on behalf of road traffic accident victims for over 25 years, I cannot stress how dangerous unnecessary lane changing is on motorways.

To my mind if you are travelling in the middle lane at 70 mph, this remains the safest place to be and I am very concerned that this particular element of the new police initiative will simply result in more accidents and more injuries.

As an example, I was travelling on the M25 on Saturday and bearing in mind this topic made sure I changed into the slower lane except when overtaking but as there are large numbers of junctions on the motorway I was obliged to move back into the middle lane frequently simply to render the inner lane safe for motorists joining the motorway.
