    Well done indeed.

My favourite has always been stock.xchng but I can see a few others worth trying.

    Thanks

Just one little thing to beware of. You can never be too sure where these 'royalty free' images come from originally. We recently had Corbis chasing us for use of an image on our old website which our graphic designer had used and obtained from a 'royalty free' stock photo site. If you buy an image you can at least rest assured this won't happen.

Fair point just made on Twitter there - always read Terms & Conditions. "Free download" doesn't always mean you can use it for free.

Right, one definitely should keep that in mind!

Since I am in Germany currently, I have been using pixelio.de quite often. You need to check for "Kommerzielle Verwendung", however, before using an image. Put the author's name on the bottom of the article or under the picture itself and you're on the safe side.

This is really helpful. I like istock but it has become quite expensive.

So what you are saying is that right click 'Save image' from google images isn't legal?

I can remember when I started a company many years ago we used this as our logo for about a year [IMG]

Until that is I worked out where my business partner got it from haha, luckily uncle Google didn't notice

Interesting list, but people had better make absolutely sure they are using images within the rules of that images copyright. Infringement can be very, very expensive - 5 figure sums for breaking copyright restrictions are not uncommon.

Of course, one thing all of these free images will lack: Any direct connection with you and your business.

You can bet that your competition WILL be using commissioned photography.

I think the days when a business could post some generic image to their website just for a bit of colour are fast fading.

I realise you are being tongue in cheek, but ...

Did you know that a lot of photographers use Google and specialised software to track their images?

Photographers can make a handy bit of extra income just from finding where their images have been used illegally.

Tracking images use using Google's free service just takes a few seconds and can yield thousands of pounds!

I can't agree with this one, most small business wont use expensive imagery, because of the cost and these days you need to focus on the end user experience.

Everyone who has ever used the web has hit a website where the images take minutes to download because the owner has uploaded a lovely stockphoto (unedited, unchanged form the 20mb file they purchased).

However I have to add that if you are only adding an image to add 'some colour' then adding an image won't necessarily sell more of your stuff.
If you feel like you need to add images to your site, check what your competition are using and find some that are different, the amount of times that the same stock images get used across a single industry are embarrassing.

How many times do you see 'Stock photo hottie' 10 Overused Stock Photos I Never Want to See Again - Yahoo Small Business Advisor
    in a single day?

Get out there with your camera and start making your own stock photos (make sure you and copyright meta data), nothing sells your services better than pictures of 'your' services!

If you want to learn more about an image head to EXIF Data Viewer point it at any image on the net/your PC and be amazed at the amount of data hidden away inside your snaps....
