I talk quite a bit in 299 Steps to Website Heaven about getting well anchored links to your site – e.g. having your keyphrase in the link that points to your site.

Now, here’s a fab tool that will let you see:

    - which sites are linking to you

    and

    - the anchor text (or linking text) that they are using

It also tells you whether the link is a NoFollow link (ie search engine bots won't follow it so it is no use in pure SEO terms)

Here it is --> Backlink Checker

Just tested it in IE and FF and works fine for me and a client I checked.

Someone mentioned this on another forum - it turned out she hadn't scrolled down to see the results - I'm not saying that's your issue, just wondering if it could be?

It's not my tool BTW, I just use it occasionally.

I have to open the site twice (fails to load first time). Then the searching seems to hang. IE7.

I still get an 'operation aborted cannot open the site' message.

I tried it but it only showed these 16 links:-

It doesn't show any other links that I know are there.

I embarrassed myself no end using that one. My advice is to stick to "Link:"

You embarrassed yourself using the tool I suggested?

This is an ancient post, so no idea whether the tool works or not anymore - it worked fine for me at the time, and not everyone uses Google as their primary search engine.

    The tool is great.

It's Link: if you use Links: you search for websites with the word "Links:" in them, which is thousands. I did this, & thought I had stumbled upon a great SEO secret, & posted such online.

    Very embarrassing.

Did you have to force me to relive it & confess my stupidity?

    aahh

    I didn't notice he'd put the 's' - must need more coffee.

Apologies for the shame inducing but it's an easy mistake to make.

I once spent ages looking at a link a client sent to me where they'd put:

link domain name (missing the : out)

It took me hours to realise because I was using the link they'd sent me and not typing it in myself.

Oh yes, I did feel rather dumb ...

Maybe some of you are trying to access it at a busy time or something. My ISP is running on candle power so I fully expected to have problems loading the page page but it came up straight away no problem.

    I's a useful tool, thanks.

I like this one - you can get the types of anchors along with the links. But on daily basis I would suggest the seobook toolbar

always seems out of use when I try, even quite early this morning.

"Out of Yahoo quota for today. Total 50,000 queries executed already."

Looks good though, could do with using it!

If you have Firefox would recommend the Swoosty SEO Tools Add-on.

    It can supply everything from:

    - Indexed Pages
    - Backlinks
    - Cache
    - Trends
    - Whois
    - Robots.txt lookup

    and more :)

    Backlinks Checker

This used to be a good tool but recently it has become unreliable and often doesn't work at all because its bandwidth is exceeded. Since it became the worst secret on the internet it has been overworked!!

I tried this tool a few months back. I think the site is overwhelmed and seems to hang or take forever. In the end I gave up.

this tool is also good for seeing what methods your competitors are using to backlink.
