Default No to Travelodge!

I want to start a site (social group?) for people who travel on business but would favour small independent pub / hotels over the dreaded Travelodge.

Given time, I will often take a punt (or better still, local recommendation) on these places, and have found a couple of gems and a couple of absolute dogs!

Price guide would be approx £50 PPPN (on a par with Travelodge)

For starters, 2 places I would heartily recommend would be:

1 )The Talbot@ Knightwick, Worcester. (suitable for much of West Midlands)

Brew their own beer and use much locally sourced produce. Friendly locals bar.

Rooms a little basic (the ones on their website look much better), but probably the best breakfast I have ever had!

2) The Fox in Much Wenlock - nr Oswestry & not much else.

Nice friendly village pubs Quirky (sloping!) rooms. V friendly

Always opt for this one when in the area.

I will shortly be staying over in Halifax & Nottingham, does anyone have any recommendations?

If you're looking for somewhere to stay near the M1/M6 junction in the Midlands, you could do a lot worse than The Greyhound in Lutterworth

I started a social group called Gourmet Traveller.

Might you be interested in combining your idea with mine? Mine started off about good places to eat but your idea is very compatible with it.

(I've not looked into how the mechanics of a joint social group would work.)

This would be useful, actually, provided the places were tested before being recommended!

Over the years I stayed in many hotels, and whether expensive or cheap I found just a handful where I went regularly.

Could it also include where NOT to go? I've stayed in some shockers.

Kay

Combining groups could be a good idea - though I haven't the first clue on how that would work!?

A few anti-recommendations could be useful (as long as it doesn't turn into a screaming match).
