Default Are you a winner?

Whoop de doo! I've just found out that I'm one of the lucky winners of the prize of a night in a posh hotel. (The competition was posted by altyfc in the sub-forum above.)

I've just been looking at the facilities and rates of the Erawan in Bangkok. Their very cheapest rooms cost in excess of £100 a night so this is a great prize.

Now I'm keeping my eyes peeled for more competitions.

I've won a few things on the Internet over the years, including £100 of menswear (Dave was pleased!). We've also won various lottery prizes - nothing major, unfortunately.

How about you? Are you a winner? Perhaps you don't enter competitions or lotteries.

When Virgin Classic Rock started and were only transmitting on the Internet, I entered a whole load of competitions. I won the new Bob Dylan CD, a DVD of Eric Clapton's 1986 world tour (his best IMHO), a book called The Rough Guide to Led Zeppelin, 2 tickets to see Bob Dylan at Wembley and (by far the best) 2 tickets to see The Who at Wembley.

It's a sort of scattergun approach, enter enough things and you'll strike lucky some of the time. Unfortunately most of the good competitions I'd like to enter are for UK residents only, so that's both you and me out, Nikki.

I wonder if some people really are lucky more than most. I won about £100 worth of books from Asia Books in a prize draw not so long ago. I do feel like I win quite a lot - some things you have to put some effort into, most are prize draws.

I've won the Euro and Irish lotteries 4 times in the last 2 days! All I have to do is send an admin fee.... (I offered to collect my winnings in person but they didn't seem keen.

On a serious note, not a competition person myself, but some good friends won £1/4 million on Spot The Ball 20 years ago, which did set them up for life!

Well, winning money isn't everything. I remember neighbours of ours, when I was a kid, who won the football pools - I mean a big jackpot. They moved out of their council house and into a fairly posh bungalow not so far away. A couple of months later, the guy was off with some gold-digger-type woman, and the wife was left miserable and wishing their lives had never changed.

I just enjoy the little free treat here and there. I don't know if a really big win would change my life for the better. Probably not. The security would be nice but it could maybe take some of the challenge and fun out of playing the Internet game.

Just though I'd share a letter from Viz

'To all those people who say that winning the lottery won't change your life; why don't you try something less ambitious like a raffle or tombola. Or would winning a tin of peaches still be too much for your imagination?'

I used to like Viz - not seen it for ages. One of my favourite letters was:

"I don't understand why people complain about products being tested on animals. If I was a rabbit or a dog I would be very happy to receive free cigarettes and cosmetics."
