Default Keyword Research

So many people miss the point when I speak about the importance of initial keyword research

It forms the basis for the website, in effect the start line. Nothing should ever be set in stone.

During this research we are able to diagnose what keywords are attainable and which ones are not, for example, brand new websites will naturally react poorly to popular terms.

Once a site is live, it's then a matter of adding regular good quality content and working on the sites link profile, whilst continually monitoring keyword performance.

Going forward It's normal to tweak a sites keywords, generally moving from uncompetitive phrases through to premiership phrases.

The whole process of SEO is long winded and very systematic, I guess it suits the way I work. 10 years ago I was responsible for the Health and Safety of a very large establishment. Due to many factors people where working in unsafe conditions, of course there was not a chance in hell I could improve matters overnight, so I set up a programme of long term improvements. 3 years later the establishment was the flagship for Health and Safety in the County. Internet marketing is very similar, understand what needs done, be patient and be expected for some very late nights.

Pete is right on the button. He does brilliant work for us. Underlines the fact that SEO is never a one-off project, just as search engines change their algorithms, competitors change their sites and each industry develops, so must the SEO work continue and evolve.

I agree, it's all about keyword research and managing clients' expectations.

Today I turned away a client with a new 4 page site on a new domain on free hosting who wanted to be number one in Google for 'recession' within 2 weeks.

When I said it wasn't possible with in that timeframe and probably never with that site, he told me someone else had quoted him £250 to achieve it, with a money back guarantee.

I told him to snatch their hand off

That 'someone else' will place adwords for the word 'recession' and say 'sue me'.

Time for me to let the bee in my bonnet play!

As stated correctly above, before you begin a website there are two important things to do.

They are to research and plan. Just as you would for any other initiative, hopefully!

There are so many power tools to research online traffic behaviour it would be odd not to use them. And those who make it their speciality to use them often can get better information, too. A great many websites are just built without knowing why, or how they will work, or what result should reasonably be expected.

They are a business tool, and a business investment too. Avoid just grabbing the cheapest, quickest fix, because it will not deliver.
