I mostly proofread international students' dissertations so that might affect the type of errors I find but the top 3 are:

- missing out articles
- using the wrong prepositions
- using the wrong tense for the section of the essay

Surprisingly not bad actually! I would guess it's because they tend to learn about apostrophes at an earlier point in their second language.

Another problem I encounter a lot is the use of US English when the work requires British English, which I suppose is a result of their second language teaching or text books.

Sometimes, yes! I think when you know you have a problem with your language you might be more inclined to focus on it and get it right, especially for academic writing.
