Default Banned Substances

I have just been over to my local corner shop and I am amazed.
2 new everyday products are now on the banned substance list. Now I can undestand why fireworks cannot be sold to under 18s, I accept that nicotene in any form and alcohol in every form need to be kept away from young people. But today I noticed a police sign on the counter that said ..................

EGGS and FLOUR must not be sold to persons under 16.

Is this a case of the police "battering" the kids into submission?

These are dangerous substances. We must protect society from them.

I think we are entering the over protective phase of social development...aka the silly rules to annoy us old folk stage!!!

Nanny state strikes again. Punishing the innocent trader instead of the chav.

Why not just bring-in a five year prison sentence for anyone caught throwing eggs/flour at innocent parties?...

Problem solved.

Next?!

This attitude seems to prevail amongst certain Police forces. That is, they are faced with an issue, and deliver a kneejerk response which is neither measured nor properly considered.

It may seem like a minor issue, but this level of state inteference in everyday life is actually quite frightening. For another example, see the poster below:

The other end of the scale is that during haloween last year the local costcutters had eggs 12 for 80p . I complained like hell!

the problem is that the judicial system and the police for that matter, refuse to enforce the laws we have. When I was a child growing up, we crapped ourselves at the thought of going to borstal. Today the thugs don't give a damn as they get 200 hours community service, (during which time they turn up and bully the shit out of those in charge, while refusing to actually DO ANYTHING).

Throwing eggs and flour at someone is assault, plain (or self raising ) and simple. Soprry but all these doo gooders who say 'we shouldn't criminalise our children. SHITE! if they behave like criminals then criminalise them, THEY are criminalising themselves.

WE KNEW that if we messed up we would go to approved school (Borstal), we toed the line 9which we bent as much as we could).

Today it is throwing eggs and flour at old ladies, tomorrow it will be mugging old ladies for their pensions!

Hit them hard and early on. First offence? no problem there is 3 months home detention curfew for you my son.

Ha, Sergant Dawson had the right idea when I was a kid, if you did something wrong and he found out about it he used to give you a bloody good clip round the ear 'ole.

They darent do it now though. Shame

I was at least as scared of my parents as I was the police - after all the police only told you off once, my mum could go for weeks!!!

They should bring back conscription for 2nd or 3rd offenders, unless they have been to public school or have a nice accent

LOL @ bad "battering" joke.

Seriously, though - here in Jersey, the 'states' are moving to make tobacco an 'under the counter only' product - and such nanny state thinking just makes me furious.

Whats next? Seriously, though. What is next? The "metal cutlery ban"? Too many people get poked by metal forks - we must all use plastic sporks.

Where does it end?

If I was having one of my more vehement days, I might allude that it could end with Karl Marx rolling over in his grave

That said, responsible trading _is_ important - selling flour and eggs to gangs of teenagers for halloweed is probably a bad idea, but ultimately it's down to the individual retailer to decide their policy and enforce it.

Although 'Prohibition' starts with the same letter as 'Punishment', the two should not be confused.

I think that the local shop should have been prosecuted for selling the flour and eggs on halloween, as it was blatantly obvious what would happen,in effect they aided an assault to take place. (Because like it or not, throwing an egg at someone is the same as throwing a rock, it is common assault)

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, the trouble with that is that one rule must apply to all.

What's needed is the police force we had in the early 1900's - Tough, respected members of the community (in actuality, not just name) with the ability to exercise discretion within the rules.

Problem is that lots of everyday items can be abused and misused.

I've heard that in Sweden they have banned Alcohol Gels/Rubs from being on general sale to under 18's because youngsters have been eating it and getting very very drunk!
