Default Identity Theft

I am not sure if this is the right place but I am sure it will magically move if needed

I was really chuffed yesterday because I finally settled on a new car after weeks of looking, thinking, trying etc. So I put the order in, paid my deposit and went off twittering about the purchase and the 4 years interest free credit.

Today though I had a call from the garage. I was asked to ring the finance company as there was a problem with my application. This is odd, I thought. Anyway, I rang the finance co and was asked how long I had lived here. 20 years in June I said. Are you sure they said? Certainly - I was here at the time!

Are you sure you haven't lived anywhere else? Yes I replied, I am sure.

It turns out that I am "linked" to another property in Essex where I have applied for credit - and why hadn't I said anything?

I was indignant. They wouldn't tell me any more except I was to contact experian to resolve the anomaly. Meanwhile they would put my application on hold.

I was mad. I haven't applied for any credit for years and certainly had no idea what they were on about. Anyway, after holding on the phone for 15 minutes waiting for experian, I spoke to a helpful chap. He sent me a link in an email and told me to register to look at my credit profile to see what the problem was and they would look into it if I objected to what was there.

So I am now awaiting my pin through the post to step a little deeper into this mystery.

Anyway, I rang the finance co back and told them what was happening and they said they will hold my application for a few days. But they had been doing some digging themselves and realized that someone had taken the first few steps in stealing my identity.

An hour after that the garage rang to say the finance had been approved despite the hassles but apparantly this is quite common at the moment. The garage said they get an average of 10 of these a month.

I wonder if it connected with all those details being lost last year on those discs.

It hasn't really inconvenienced me apart from making me feel soiled and abused, and a little embarassed having my credit worthiness challenged and found wanting at a local garage I have been using for many years.

I will see what I find when I get my experian pin but the finance co said the best way to stop this happening is to subscribe to the monthly service at experian for £6 odd a month and keep checking my credit file regularly. Apparantly I can check it every day if I want and it doesn't show up as a credit search. But I can keep a tight grip on anything untoward that may happen.

I may want to change my wife's car soon so if I don't sort this out it will rear it's head again then.

Daily may be a little excessive but it does seem we all have to take more than just basic measures to stop this insidious crime in its tracks.

Think it can't happen to you? yeah right - so did I

Can I just say that the finance companies and credit card companies have started scare mongering and during your panic when they alert you or you contact them, they try to sell you their identity theft protection or other type of cover.

I have been told this ID cover is useless because a CC or bank has a duty to protect you anyway so you're not actually paying for anything, just a bit of help.

I didn't have any insurance offered. The finance co just said to keep a watch on my credit file.

Experian are keen to keep their records accurate as this is obviously happening a lot which is why I suppose they offer this online service to keep an eye on things.

This isn't about someone cloning a card, it is about using personal infomation to get a mortgage, take out a bank loan or credit card - stuff like that.

They have done, or tried to do, one of these things by referring back to "their" old address, which is my current address. Hence the linking which caused the problem - it is a precursor to a change of address permanently.

For all I know they could have applied for a £100k mortgage or something...that is what is so worrying.

If it was just misuse of a card I wouldn't have felt so violated. They are actually trying to hijack my good name and run up huge debts for me to deal with.

I can't wait to see how far they got and thank goodness I found the car yesterday - next week may have been too late.

Perhaps having our birthdays on this forum is not such a good idea, with the age as well. I have just looked at the front page and seen a member whose birthday today is 57.

This gives potential id muggers one of the essential bits of information about us that they need - our date of birth.

Or am I just a little paranoid now?

I remember signing up to a forum last year and putting a wrong date of birth in on purpose. I then promptly forgot about it until everyone starting wishing me happy birthday in January when my birthday is actually in March!

Being anonymous online is an art that many people ignore.

Unfortunately, the criminal element of society has picked up on this and are now taking advantage. I tracked down a friend from high school the other day, using nothing but their name and a couple of other small things to start.

This is a cautionary tale! It does not sound like fun. And, as Ray says, we are probably non of us proof against it.

I have been refused credit so many times now I have just accepted I cant have any - despite never having defaulted on anything in my life. I suspect, if I investigated, it would be something like this. So i probably shall now, so Ray will have done me a favour raising the subject.

In the modern world of everything on line, is security tight enough? I dont know the answer. I do wonder though.

I never enter my correct DOB on networks. As mentioned, it's an identity theft issue which I've been aware of for years. I only give it to financial institutions who require it for the obvious legal reasons.

How convenient that they've got you to pay for a service of theirs 'just in case'.
Cynical I might be, coincidence, it could be.

It could seem like that but in fairness, they do advertise the service quite widely and I have known about it for a long time.... just never thought it would apply to me

Hi Ray,

sorry to hear that this happened but thankfully you applied for credit and found out about it in time. Imagine what could have happened had you not.

Experian offer thsi service to all, they have doen for years and I think it is a great way to keep an eye on things.

I once applied for my credit report only to find that the person living close by whom I assumed was a friend had applied for credit in my name but her address

Good luck.
