Default Windows 7 - Are you excited yet?

Windows 7 has been through its beta and will be going to Release Candidate Stage from 5th May 2009.

BBC NEWS | Technology | Microsoft preps Windows 7 release

Although I love XP I am looking forward to the release of Windows 7.

What is your view?

Default Is it just a way to put the Vista brand to rest?

There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of tech. different from Vista, more Akin to the XP service packs.

The UI changes are definitely positive (I'm sure Mac users will recognise some of the new features), but it does seem to be something they could have released as an extra or update to Vista...

"but it does seem to be something they could have released as an extra or update to Vista..."

I agree, rather then charge customers for a new OS.

From the looks of it, windows 7 looks like a fix to turn vista into what it should have been. It does look like a bit of a big ask charging as a new OS. However i believe Apple will be doing the same with the updated version of Leopard, named Snow Leopard.

I use this reliably on a Samsung NC10 and have done for a month or so now. Much faster than the XP version that came with it and than any linux distro I put on. I'm a Mac boy but it gets a thumbs up from me!

I haven't got round to installing windows 7 yet but I here that the retail price is to be more expensive than that of Vista. Not a good move in the current economic downturn if you ask me.

I wonder what the take up of Windows 7 will be. I hear that Dell are not happy with the pricing model for the new OS.

It is annoying as a PC builder as a huge chunk of the cost is blown on the OS.

I loaded Windows 7 onto a test machine and it trashed the disk - had to wipe & reinstall.

I really don't like the way Microsnot keep fiddling with where everything is. With almost every release of Windows they've changed the way things are done or moved where to find them so that there's yet another learning curve.

I have read - although I'm not sure iff this is just for the beta - that there's no upgrade path from XP, requiring a clean install. Can't see that happening - will wait until I need a new PC

It does seem as though Vista was almost as big a lemon as ME which required a hurried release of another version to fix
