The first Google logo was designed in GIMP. I think they use Photoshop now they can afford it though.

Lol, cool....I never really thought about it that way but the name has always puzzled me somewhat. Actually, this is a topic very close to my heart atm because my poor trusty old Photoshop is on the blink and I've only just recently (like yesterday) downloaded Gimp to try as an alternative. I'll keep you all posted on this very thread as to my progress. It doesn't look toooooo bad to be honest.

AdamW (OP), you can't be too shabby at image manipulation btw, cos your avatar looks really good. I can't seem to get mine to look quite so bold. Any pointers?

Hey I'm really starting to get into the Gimpster atm guys! Out of necessity, I had to do a really quick blueprint of a Toucan for a prospective Client and I was not sure how to even use my scanner in conjunction with the program. Panic attack lead to knowledge. For anyone who is interested, it's found under File....Create.....Scanner/camera. Slightly different protocol to Photoshop but apart from that, a lot of the features are very similar and I think this Gimp could turn out to be a good crack. At the end of the day, you save your images as JPEGs and it basically does the same job. Now where's that paint bucket?

Oh, here's the Toucan btw......

Very messy yes, but hey, Rome wasn't built in a day lolz.

Sorry Mods, these images are a bit on the large side mainly due to the reason I haven't quite thought about converting them to 72 dpi just yet.

Still don't like GIMP - the UI is terrible. I find information on the GIMP tutorial website really helps out with paths and selections and such. GIMP - Tutorials

As I'm not doing a lot of graphics - GIMP is just the right tool. One thing I've learned is to use a lot of layers and save into photoshop format (xcf) for design. When I'm done I export into .png/.jpg as appropriate but keep the original in photoshop.

Well yes at the end of the day it's just a free alternative to anyone who can't get their hands on Photoshop really. It is crap quite frankly.

Used the GIMP the other day for the first time in ages and boy did it take some work just to do simple stuff. I'd always thought that if you used it daily you'd soon pick it up just fine.

Also used Inkscape (Illustrator replacement). That did test me! The Chatr logo (eps version) still has a white background because you have to set something with the clipboard in X11. I do wish someone would make these programs work natively on a Mac

Try the Aviary set of tools Welcome to Aviary , might be of use as I've always thought the same about Gimp especially compared to Photoshop
