Default Corel Vs Adobe - Whats your opinion (from professional experience)

I've been looking into Corel lately and i have heard some of the pros and cons before of Adobe VS Corel but i'm looking for a little more input.

Anyone used both? Whats your thoughts?

Corel Draw Vs Illustrator? (does CD have a mesh tool?)

Paintshop Pro Vs Photoshop? (is it just as advanced?)

Painter Vs Photoshop? ( i know that painter is the bee's knee's, but any other thoughts)

Also does anyone know what Corel Photo-Paint is?

Is it Paintshop pro, a cut down version or something different altogether? The Corel site mentions Photo-paint in one of its packages but has no reference to it anywhere else.

Looking for answers from a user and professional level.

I use both Corel and Adobe products on a daily basis, in a professional capacity and for both Graphic and Photographic output. Have done so (from amateur to pro) for over ten years.

Do you mean the tool which can shape and adjust shading on pseudo-3D images? Yes, Corel pretty much innovated it.

Photoshop I would say. Bear in mind that Paintshop Pro was bought out from JASC by Corel so it's not strictly a Corel product.

As far as I'm aware, Painter does different things from PS so I don't think it can be compared.

Corel PhotoPaint is the Photoshop equivalent included in the Corel Graphics Suite (Vector App, Bitmap Editor and Image Tracing). In many respects, it's light-years ahead of Photoshop in my experience.

Now, here's my honest opinion on comparing the two:

CorelDRAW vs Illustrator

CorelDRAW, the vector application, innovated and continues to innovate many of the tools/effects/options also seen in Illustrator. Adobe is just very good at 'nicking' them and claiming them as their own!

From an ease of use perspective, CorelDRAW kicks Illustrator into a cocked hat (whatever that means!). Its node editing tools are legendary and most functions operate on a right-click basis (so it's very intuitive). I've struggled to get to grips with Illy for years and it's just useless by comparison. I can do things in half the time with CorelDRAW. As an aside, signwriting firms swear by it.

PhotoPaint vs Photoshop

Now here's where the lines gaussian blurr a little. Both apps are extremely competent tools but it's horses for courses with PP vs PS. If you're a died-in-the-wool PS user, you will struggle to get the hang of it because it works intuitively, rather than having to know where things are (as with Photoshop). Again, I use both apps daily but I can work 50% faster with PhotoPaint than I can with Photoshop. Photoshop is better supported with plug-ins/filters/tutorials of course, but purely because of its user base - it's not surprising really.

Don't get me wrong, neither Corel App is perfect but I've wanted for nothing all these years.

At the end of the day, why not trial it and see*? I'll state again that Adobe users will find it 'alien' - but only because they're so used to PS and Illy.

Adobe: Industry Standard
Corel: Industry Leading!

*You'll need to be on PC - Corel stopped supporting Mac years ago.
=========

As an aside, want to hear a story?

I designed a logo for a Mac Games site a few years back. I didn't have the heart to tell them I'd done it on a PC - and with Corel!

It gets funnier: I also once designed a logo for a very well-known Photoshop tutorial site. I produced the goods to their satisfaction, they paid, I delivered the files but when they found out that it had been done on a PC and with Corel, they refused to use it on principal! I guess they just 'assumed' it was done with Adobe products due to the quality. Which kinda proves my point...

Default THANKS

Thanks very much Mark, very helpful.

Mesh tool: "Yes, Corel pretty much innovated it." I didn't know that.

Painter Vs Photoshop? I know there totally different but i do a lot of painting and they both seem to be the top dogs favoured by digital painters.

Photopaint : "Corel PhotoPaint is the Photoshop equivalent "
Thanks very much, that cleared that up for me. I thought PaintShop Pro was the equivalent, hence the first question.

"most functions operate on a right-click basis" Very interesting.

With all the input, you have pretty much sold me on Coral! I'll definitely go a step further and check it out.
You should be a Coral spokesman!
Are you on commission?

Photoshop has always been the industry standard.

The publishing industry was nearly 90% Macintosh based when I first got involved in 1992. At the time, there was not the software support or the tradition to use Windows based computers for graphics work. It was not until 1995 when the internet and the web started taking off that a whole new niche of fledgeling web designers found a need to have professional level photo editing software for Windows computers.

I cannot remember when Adobe developed Photoshop for Windows, but I want to say it was around version 3.0 or 4.0. So Adobe had Photoshop on the Windows platform before the big web craze hit. It was also right about this time that Corel was shipping PhotoPaint with their CorelDraw Suite. And since many smaller publishers were already using CorelDraw, it was natural for them to start using Photopaint.

The biggest area where Corel lost with PhotoPaoint was with web development features -- they didn't even try. The big battle between Adobe and Corel was over Illustrator and CorelDraw, so that was where Corel focused most of their software development. Therefore PhotoPaint was not evolving with the needs of the industry.

For some print designers, and huge numbers of silkscreen and sign designers, the Corel Suite is still widely used as the primary production software. However, for most of the graphic design, publishing and photography industries, Adobe is the vendor of choice.

Yup, kinda like Google - it's all people know, but there are equally good/better alternatives.

PC and corel was a big no no when I trained (many moons ago). I trained using Freehand and photoshop on MACS but one of the first jobs I had, required me to work on a PC using Corel ..and I picked it up no problems. Its very easy to use. I personally prefer Illustrator but I would say both are excellent packages.

I don't know about PhotoPaint..but Photoshop gets the thumbs up for me

I was a big Corel fan and used it long before I used Adobe things. Shame they don't develop for Mac but you can't have everything can you?!

I like PhotoShop, but I'm just an amateur. Should I be looking at other stuff instead?

Have to agree with Mark on this one, I am a PhotoShop CS4 user, I love it! but my logo side of the business is not huge for that reason, I VERY rarely use vectors, so am not up on them as much as i should be, and i know i may take longer on some designs because of this, but i have a very healthy return and reorder rate, i think due to the work that i do put in for my clients, but if you are not one or the other yet then i would follow Marks advice, its a bit like the Nikon/Canon argument, I will only use a Nikon and a fellow shoooter friend of mine will only use a Canon, both great in their own way.

Did i just start a new thread on cameras? lol

I always use Photoshop. The possibilities are endless. I haven't used Coral before anyone know what it would be useful for? Is there anything it can do that Photoshop can't?

Yes its best to use both, tho i rarely use corel, but Corel handles vectors files, you can save to .eps in PS but not anywhere near the speed, quality or ease of use as you will have in Corel.

Mostly print and logo for .eps, but hope this answers your question.

Thanks for the tips. I would normally use Illustrator for creating logos etc. Have you used Illustrator?
