I think it's still important to support local businesses such as green grocers and butchers. Can you imagine if they were all gone and all we had were hyper markets?

I used to be an ardent Tesco shopper but since moving to Darlington I've been stuck as the nearest one was 25 mins away. A Teso mettro has now opened up in the town but it's tiny. Tesco keep trying to get stores in Darlington but there was a successful local campaign that stopped them. There were plans to knock down the ugly old Town Hall, build a new one and a Tescos and some flats. It really would have killed the town. Darlington is a market town and has a massive indoor market right in the middle of the shopping area. You can get fruit and veg, decent meat and the like all in one place, from local people selling local produce. It's fantastic.

I was unaware of Tesco's policies towards suppliers and do think it's awful but as has been said I suspect the others are doing the same. It's scadalous that the OFT aren't getting involved if this is really going on.

I've been trying my best to avoid supermarkets for a while now - I try to shop locally but often (as I live rurally) these shops are closed or don't stock what I need them to ... I found The Essential wholesale trading company (can't post a link as I haven't posted enogh yet) and now I do most of my shopping there (they deliver!). Its a wholesale ethical food place, and as its a co op its owned by everyone who works there. You do need to have a bit of storage space, but I buy bulk wasing up liquid, bulk laundry liquid, tinned tomatoes by the pallet and pasta by the box! They do most things really, great for loo rolls and things like that too - anything that you can get job lots of and not worry that its gonna go off too quickly. It works out way cheaper, its great. Fresh veg I get locally and only go to the supermarket if I want a bit of fresh fish now really ...
