Default My New Website - Please review

I have set up my own company and as a way to reduce costs I have produced my own website.

It is almost complete, and only needs a few tweeks, I have aimed it towards UK clients looking for a freelance kitchen designer. It also aims to help people with information about everything kitchen and has latest kitchen trend news.

I would like people to review the ease of use, is it informative enough, does it look proffessional? Any comments good or bad.

I would appreciate any comments and thank you for your time.

Kind regards

Paul

Paul Stafford Design

I don't think you need the intro page. Seems a pointless click I have to make.

Main page was very slow to load - but wow I was impressed when it finished. I think it's very creative! The site is easy to read an navigate when you get into the other pages and clearly laid out.

Thank you for your comments. I have the title page as I was learning flash, but I can easily take it away.

And thank you, how do you think I could reduce the load page without loosing any quality?

Kind regards

Paul

Sorry to be a wet blanket but if you read the posting guidelines for the 'review my site' section, you'll see that you're required to have a minimum of 15 postings before asking for a review.

For an amateur website it is very good. You might face issues to do with the usability though. It's very unorthodox and may confuse some.

I'd look at you SEO:

Some good tips here:

Hi Paul,

looks good, the images might be a little large (I'm on a great connection so it's a little hard to tell if they are). On that note, I looked at the about me image (btw, changing the image name to Paul_stafford would help in SEO) and by optimising the jpg in fireworks I reduced it to 4.8k The text below that image would work harder for you as actual text (and take up less bandwidth), ok so it might look a little different in different browsers but all those words add to your ranking.

there's a big black box on the left on Paul Stafford Design - News where I was waiting for something to load, nothing did. I would use this space, something artsy maybe.

Although the portfolio with the scrolling is nice I think these images could be optimised as well.

Good luck.
Tom

Front page takes a while to load, and is all images, so not good for search engines, but I agree it's quite cool when it does load.

The Twitter widget on your news page slows everything down too.

No SEO?

Tom - Thank you so much for this, I don't know much about SEO and as this is my first website i've got alot to learn! But the help is extremley valuable and I have already strated looking at the points you have made.

Nikki - I'll see if I can reduce the size of the images on the front page, and maybe I could add meta tags? Would that help with the search engines? And yeah I have been thinking the widget doesn't add much, I will look at doing something more interesting or useful to fit in this space.

Thank you

I wrote this list for someone with Wordpress blog, and figured that you might find it useful too. The basic fundamentals are the same even if your site / blog isn’t a Wordpress one. (Full article with embedded links here: Internet Marketing Article - 20 steps to website heaven )

1) Do some keyword research – what are your target market searching for? Use the Google Keyword Tool if you want something free. Start with basic phrases and find out what people in your area are looking for. Remember, in most cases, the more searches a phrase has, the more competition there will be for it – don’t try and climb Everest in the first month; start with some niche phrases that you can get quick wins on and use them.

2) Install the All In One SEO plugin for Wordpress – it’s a great tool and allows you to change the title tags and META tags of every page of your site/blog. Using the phrases that you found in step 1, plan the pages of your site around the phrases – you want to be able to include those phrases in the title tags and META description tags of your pages. However, this is not the be all and end all – if the phrase isn’t included in the page too then you’re not doing it properly.

3) Make sure you use your phrase in H1 tags on the page where possible – but remember, you’re writing more for the visitor than for the search engines; don’t get carried away and end up with something that puts your visitors off. (Also make sure every page of your site has a strong call to action – when I’ve finished reading it, what should I do next?)

4) Sign up for a Google Webmaster Tools account and follow the steps to verify your site – this account will give you a LOT of information about your site and no website should be without it.

5) As part of GWT, you need an XML sitemap – generate a map and upload, then register it. If your site changes infrequently, update this sitemap every time you update the site. If it changes a lot, then consider installing a sitemap plugin for Wordpress that will update it automatically for you.

6) Read about anchor text Bookmark that post and come back to it regularly – anchor text is one of the most important things for you to remember. Seriously.

7) Set up a Squidoo lens – maybe even more. Link them back to your site. Remember the anchor text.

8) Set up a BT Tradespace account and post some of your (amended) content over there. Remember your anchor text. Take part in the communities there. Remember your anchor text.

9) Join online networking sites and include your keyphrases in your signature. Remember your anchor text. Also remember to take part – if you’re not posting / replying / being part of the community then no-one, including Google, is seeing your signature. UK Business Labs, Ecademy, Business Scene, Linked In, Xing – there are a lot to choose from.

10) Write an article. Top Ten Tips To type articles work well as do short snappy articles that are easy to read. Remember your article is to educate the reader, not just promote your site. Have you written it? Now write another ten. Remember to get your keyphrases in there, as you’re going to use them as anchor text.

11) Post your articles, one every few days, to Ezine Articles. Post them to and communities you belong to that allow you to. Publish them on your website. Remember your anchor text.

12) Get a Twitter account. Download Tweetdeck. Tell everyone you know you have a Twitter account. Use it to interact with people, follow interesting people and yes, to promote your sites / blogs / posts etc. Don’t listen to people who tell you it doesn’t work – it does when done well.

13) Download 299 Steps to Website Heaven – spend time going through it properly. You don’t have to employ an expert to do SEO if you have the time and energy to do it yourself. Of course you will make mistakes, of course you will become frustrated, but it is possible to do well without spending lots of money.

14) Read my Internet Marketing Articles – they’re free and they should help.

15) Look into Ning, Tribe, Free Index etc – find communities you can interact with.

16) Find relevant directories to submit your site to.

17) Now find some more

18) Reread about anchor text – you’ll have forgotten about it

19) Make sure you track and test everything – use Clicky or Google Analytics; I prefer Clicky as you can see visitors in real time.

20) Constantly research and find new places to list / promote your website. Things change constantly and by the time I’ve submitted this list, it will be out of date!

20a) Drop me a line and let me know how you get on!

We've already had a chat elsewhere ... and I am, of course, biased!

I love your site ... it looks very professional ... my only comment would be that it looks as if you're aiming at the very top end of the market. All your examples are big, fairly minimal, modern kitchens - glossy magazine stuff.

They don't bear much relationship to your average domestic kitchen.

You may well be aiming at that market ... and if you can get enough work, all well and good. There are many more people looking for something more modest, though ... and it might be an idea to have some samples that show you can cater for them too. If you don't have any pictures like that ... then use some CAD pictures. Maybe put them in the blog with some design comments.

Oh and listen to everything Nikki says! (Her free help has been invaluable to me in the past ... and she's going to help me with my site ... once I pull my finger out and finish more of it off!)

HTH

Hi Ray, I'm sorry you were waiting for so long. The front page is quite image heavy. I've tried optimising the images to get the size down? Could you check to see if it has worked?

Many thanks for your time

It loads much quicker now - but I am on my laptop now so not a direct comparison.

It's late but here are a few thoughts off the top of my head.

There is no mention of prices. I would want an idea what I was letting myself in for if I were to send you a floor plan.

Why are there no plan/design examples of your work? I am not impressed by seeing images "courtesy" of someone else that are clearly not "real" kitchens.

You don't give me much info as to why I would want to choose you over a free service supplied by Magnet or similar, or a plan I make up myself using the brochure from B&Q.

What is your USP?

Are you aiming at the really top end of the kitchen market - £25k and above or the average kitchen in a 3 bed semi around £3k?

You don't have any testimonials from happy customers. They would give credibility to your site along with a picture of the person in their new kitchen.

I agree that it's smart and professional and - crucially in my opinion - lets people know who you are.

One comment I would make, having decided to have a news section, be sure to keep it updated. Many sites let themselves down when you vist the news section to see the last entry was in 2007..

I love the design, very original.

Not so much a fan of the affiliate page, I think you could get better results just using text links instead of the banners and write some copy about each of your "partners"
