I know it's an old thread, but thought I'd chuck my two pence in.
Recently, I went for a drink in a small town a few miles from anywhere. I had a lift arranged, but the car broke down so I had to make my own arrangements. I phoned various taxi companies, but none of them would drive out to this town in case it was a hoax, and none of them took card payments.
On another ocassion, a friend of mine found herself stranded in freezing cold Edinburgh due to a late train which meant she missed the last bus. She had no cash on her, so I set about calling her a cab. Again, I ran into the problem of taxi companies not accepting card payments.
Personally, I'd love the ability to book taxis online at short notice, especially if it included:
- A calculator, to work out the cost of a journey
- Online payment
- Instant acceptance (just-eat.co.uk, the takeaway ordering site, actually keep you on a page until the restaurant has accepted your order)
- An account facility to make it easy to see your taxi spend and do away with the need to keep thousands of handwritten receipts
- An app or text messaging service to make it quick and easy

I agree with Victoria.. text would be a great idea as long as a reply was received with ET of arrival. Bars can be very noisy and standing outside to make the call sometimes isn't an option. Online is also good idea, I would definetly use it if booking in advance if it came to my area as it's free

I think it would only work and would be great as an iphone application where you can store your address so all you need to type in is the time you want it for.... easy and simple. And i would definately use an application like that for my local area. And therefore brings in regular custom.

I use the edinburgh city cabs iPhone app constantly - twice a day at least for cab bookings. It has built in GPS, tracker etc and quick save favourites. I can book it on there and be in the cab itself less than five minutes later. It literally takes less time using that than it does to phone up, wait in the queue, say the places, repeat the place names, repeat them again, re-confirm how many people, re-confirm your name, remind them of where they're picking up from......

I would definitely book via an app, as long as I knew the company.

I wouldn't feel comfortable unless you had some sort of system which kept me updated on the process, e.g. Taxi #17 booked, Taxi#17 on route to your location, etc etc.
Otherwise I would be worried the order may not have been processed.

I don't think I would. I wan't to know it's coming. But then again I don't use them much and when I do it's because I'm in a rush.

That's the thing I guess. It depends on if you're using them for a 'now' booking or an advanced booking.
These days I do most stuff online, so booking next week's airport transfer online with a taxi website would suit me quite well.

Why does anyone ever need to book a taxi, there is always one on its way.

lol - you mean there's always a taxi on its way, just not when you want one!
Overall I guess it depends. For the here and now taxi, online booking may not be the best option but if you're booking an airport transfer or a long distance journey in advance, it might be worthwhile, something like a heathrow transfer to oxford or an executive car journey around London for prospective clients.

Well this thread is a year old.
Has the idea made any money? I am going to guess the answer is no.
If so , why are you still wasting time in it?

Congratulations on spotting the thread's age, not that its relevant!
This was posted to see how people felt about booking taxis online. Whether money is being made or not is not the point of this thread, but then I don't think you posted to add any sort of value to the discussion.

I'm just wondering why you are so enthused with the idea. You return to a thread that is a year old to talk about the same idea. I was hoping you were going to tell me it was a great idea and is making money. By the looks of it, you are not making money and are still messing around with the bad idea

If you actually look back, others have been posting their opinions on the topic and I've sometimes responded on that basis.
I run a minicab website which takes online bookings and has been doing so for at least the last 2 years, so this was never meant to be a "new idea", but just to see how many people had or would even consider using the Internet for taxis, or do they use taxi cards posted through their door or anything else.
