Default Submitting to DMOZ

Is it still worth submitting to DMOZ or is it a spent force?

I submitted again yesterday. Submitted 3 of my own different sites on 3 different themes last year and only 1 got accepted. I can say it was one that had far less competition than the others, so whether that makes a difference, I dont know.

ODP - Open Directory Project As I understand it, it's a manually approved search engine. Could be wrong though!

I would say it's definitely still worth applying, especially as it's free - it can't do any harm!

Yes, Google and others check DMOZ listings but apart from that, it's probably also handy generally. We seem to be listed 3 times and I've never submitted our site o.o

DMOZ don't look for sites, did someone do SEO for you and submit it Dominic? It's my understanding you have to submit your own site? Could be wrong though! Anyone else shed any light on this?

Someone must've submitted it on our behalf, or perhaps my colleague did. I might've even done it as a friend was a DMOZ editor and suggsted it to me, but I don't remember o.o

But yes afaik you definitely need to submit it yourself, and only ever once

I went on an SEO course last year and getting in to DMOZ is good as Google take a lot of notice of sites in DMOZ. It can sometimes take a long time to get your site registered because all the sites are manually checked (one of the reasons Google likes DMOZ). Don't resubmit your site too often (4-6 months) or to too many categories (2 or 3 at most) otherwise it'll be permanently barred as spam. You can often get it in quicker if you use a regional category - for example my Redline site is in Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: England: Leicestershire: Lutterworth: Business and Economy

Default Yes

It doesn't take long and if accepted can have some Google benefit.

As others have said, not every site is accepted, and you have more chance of being accepted if you submit in categories 3 or 4 links down, such as regional categories.

A lot of directory sites pull their listings from DMOZ, so it's well worth getting listed. Having said that, the only sites I've managed to get listed are charity websites. I have a strong feeling that the web design categories are moderated by the competition...

Default Definitely

The web design categories are most definitely moderated by web designers - but that's how Dmow (use to be Newhoo) was built - experts moderating.

I used to be a Dmoz moderator many many moons ago - it's a pain in the arse, the rules are massive and it's sometimes easier to refuse a site than explain why someone has to move it into a different category.

Plus, because it's unpaid, work tends to back up.

Then of course, the novelty wears off for a lot of people so they leave.

Web designers and SEO people love being moderators bcos they can make sure their clients sites go where they want them to.

Mat, try drilling down big time and sumitting in the quietest category you can - so where do you live? Find that town/village, then Business Services then whatever you can - you're moer likely to get accepted.

Re-checked DMOZ today and I seem to be listed! I wondered where that jump in rankings came from

As I understand it, the category you choose to list in can make a big difference in how long it takes to get listed and this is because each sub category has it's own moderator and the back logs can be huge.

If there is one directory getting listed in though, this is surely the one.
