Don't blame DMOZ itself, it is possible you were dealing with one of the corrupt meta editors who was looking after his own.
By and large DMOZ editors are real good people who work hard, but there are two bad elements there.
1. megalomaniacs who are just total arses who believe they are all powerful and that as long as they wield their power they are feeling good.
2. Corrupt editors who have got there and are being protective of their little world.
These people WILL get found out in time as all their actions are visible to those that monitor their actions, but it has RUINED what was a great directory, probably the best on the web. Sadly now it is out of date, and the logic you describe above explains why.
The term blog, is a derivative of web log it is a genre of site, NOT a piece of software. By dumbos logic, If you build a web log using normal HTML, it can't go into the blog section becuase it isn't using blogging software?
Arses like this have killed the ODP, you list a site in the area best suited according to content and/or location.

Kay,
I had a similar experience to you, except I didn't really want to be an editor in the 1st place, I was volunteering out of a sense of giving something back, and so was rather relieved when they rejected me!

Same here - well - expect I was offering to be an editor for an area connected to where a live, which was low volume - and could have done with improving.
I wasn't even told why I was rejected..

Are you sure about that? I have one site that has over 3000 backlinks thanks to it being in DMOZ since 1999

Have you tried submitting it to a local geographic category first? You can have 2 listings, the trick is to get the local one in, then apply for the generic one. The editor will run a check to see if it is anywhere, will pick up your local listing, then allow you into the generic one

Most people are not aware that you can have 2 listings. geo and generic. So you have a 'yourtown' listing, and a ;'your niche' listing.
See this is why you are paying me the consultancy fee. oh, hang on LOL

It's certainly frustrating trying to get approved on there, I've had several sites approved since 2003 ish, which have decent PR purely because there are loads of directories who (as mentioned before) build their directory initially from DMOZ data, but recently getting a site approved has been a different matter!

Actually it's a directory as opposed to being a search engine. It can help as Google uses it as the base for the Google directory.
I have been a local DMOZ editor for several years and I can tell you that one of the problems is that people do not take the time to read the clearly defined rules when they submit their info.
For example only facts are allowed. No promotional language is permitted in your submission and the rules on this are very clear. People just ignore this and submit their site as the "best" and "cheapest" and write all sorts of promotional fluff into their submissions.
Editors then have the choice of rewriting it in accordance with the rules or ignoring it so help them by following the rules. The easier you make it for them to add your website the sooner it can get done.

I'm glad I read this, I thought it was just me who wasn't getting accepted!
I've submitted my site twice so far, first time about 6 months ago, second time about a month ago.
I've had no response from them to say I've been turned down but no listing either.
It says it is manually updated so will take a few months for your listing to be added so I'm still keeping my fingers crossed
As far as SEO goes, I think it is still a pretty important directory to be listed in

It's definitely worth it, but can be very tough indeed to get accepted.
Follow their guidelines VERY carefully and you should be OK.
Be patient though and DON'T pester them.

How often is pestering? I think I've tried about 3 times over 15 months or so. Think I'll have another go now!

I would say yes still worth submitting but getting in is another subject.
I managed to get 2 listings in Dmoz for our website and have got 7 clients in so far, however some categories are a nightmare and never get accepted.
I found it was more succesful to submit to the local categories for your industry

I do quite a lot of the seo for my own company and i have quite a few sites and have become a bit of an seo addict.
Yes getting into dmoz does give you a bit of a boost in the serps but i can tell you it's not some mega mega boost that will get you ranked number one by anymeans. It's just a good way to get a FREE link that has a good bit of value.
To be honest if there was any justice dmoz would be shut down as it's a pointless site.
