Totally unfair to the genuine and quality SEO workers who spend a lot of time and effort on their projects. SEO isnt a fast process, it takes many hours per month (even on a simple project) which is why it is expensive. However, most SEO experts should be able to work with any sized budget, but would target less attractive/competitive keywords.

Saying \\\"because any seo worth his weight can make far more money doing his/her own seo projects.\\\" is kinda like saying that any builder worth his salt shouldnt need to work on other peoples property...he should just build his own. Or any marketting expert should just work for him/herself marketting their own projects.

As for \\\"Anyone with a little bit of seo knowledge could go onto vworker or elance and find a good writer who will charge £20 per articles,\\\" . SEO isnt just about articles....it probably represents around 5% of the work.

I think you are grossly underestimating what is involved in SEO work.
Sorry i was meant to write £2 per article, the 0 was a typo, and seo these days is almost all about articles. Sure there's keyword research, on page seo and conversion optimisation. But these things take very little time. I can fix up all onpage seo on a small website in a few hours, keyword research will take a couple of hours.

Getting articles written, guest posts written and submitted to appropriate related websites etc is about 80% of the work.

But far the worst seo services around are those that offer web design and seo as a package, they're in most cases completely useless

I would say that that is a very dangerous assumption, based on events during the last few days.

Well they shouldnt be, as they are designing the site from the ground up and can have a bigger picture of the SEO strategy for the site before it even goes live.

"seo these days is almost all about articles"
No offence....but your totally wrong.

"I can fix up all onpage seo on a small website in a few hours"
Your amazingly fast. 5 page site, getting the on-site SEO in place would take me an average of 12 hours. And it isn't a one time job...if you are performing SEO properly you would being going back on a constant basis to make changes based on performance.

Yep I definitely agree. If you don't have a proper initial budget and monthly to match, no point getting into SEO. There's much more work to do than people think. They normally realize it late in the process and it takes them more budget to fix their early mistakes than if they worked with a pro from day 1. I guess we all need to experience things for ourselves :-)

What do you do every month to a website ? Once a website is optimized, its optimized isn't it? I would be immensly grateful if you could tell me what services are generally included in a monthly fee?

Thank you in advance!
Alison
SEO is ALWAYS an ongoing process. Anybody who says "I've finished my SEO" is mistaken.

A website should always be tested, tweaked and experimented with to ensure that you're gettimng maximum possible traffic.

Google rewards living, breathing websites, plus a steady buildup of backlinks.

Fresh content is absolutely key too.

It’s a good question

I’m currently working on 20 projects, obviously the work varies depending on where we are in the process, to give you an indication of the work

Full website designs

Site revamps

Researching keywords

Implementing new keywords into a site structure

On-site optimisation

Producing website copy

Consulting on Internet marketing (generally around the ‘what next’ factor)

Consulting on individual businesses (generally surrounds improvements to conversion ratios)

Daily link building

Everything else (I get asked to help out with all sorts of things, sometimes unrelated to marketing)

Generally speaking, you won’t stay around long in this game if you cannot produce quality results, this involves

Improving the online status of a business

Improving the visibility of a business

Understanding what is needed to drive websites to the top of search engines for competitive terms

Improving the thickness of a clients wallet.

I'd agree with most of the 'pro SEO' posts here. SEO is not our core service, but we do this for some clients and there is a lot of work involved. There's a world of difference between a great SEO and a poor SEO, and costs will reflect that - as in any industry.

Hats off to the SEO guys who do it full time and do it well!

Are SEO people the new graphic designers - i.e. vilified for what they charge?

You sounds like you don't value the efforts of an SEO service.

It is not just link building either, not a decent SEO service anyway.

As with anything, you get what you pay for.

thesalesprofessionals is totally right, we have had companies come to us after they have chosen the "cheaper route" and in the long run it costs them more to fix it is cheaper option believe it or not can actually affect your business, and especially as the search engines are always changing there rules etc.

For example we don't claim to be the cheapest for SEO, but at the end of the day we know what we are doing and we don't promise you will be ranked no.1 for specific keywords in under a week because that just does not happen!

SEO is not the be all and end all of your business, if you don't have the capital to focus on SEO wait until you can, until then you still do have Social Media which I believe is good to fall back on
