I would buy the domain from whoever hosts your site. It's usually easier doing it this way tbh

Never keep all your eggs in the same basket, Ive dealt with so many people in deep dodo because they have entrusted in small companies and they have lost everything with very little they can do.

Domains should always be registered with large trusted cooperation's in my opinion, Alot of the smaller guys have some bad habits especially web services companies like development or web-design whom take on clients who setup their entire site from start to finish. I.e registering the domain name too.

The amount of small businesses ive seen that has allowed a 3rd party to register and maintain their domains and hosting and not checking that their whois info is actually registered to their business is unreal. If Small webdesign/development company goes bust and is unreachable , domain is not retrievable for the small business because of false whois data.

Obviously you cant tarnish all companies with the same brush but it is a massive problem with the small business sector so id never recommend registering domains either with a small company or in the same location as your hosting.

If the domains are .co.uk then id highly recommend ensuring the whois details are correct and then managing the domain via the nominet panel ( if its a .co.uk )

I highly recommend what Adam H says above, businesses and especially businesses that rely upon their domain name(s) for e-commerce etc., Having your domain name with a well established domain registration company is of significant importance and should be considered strongly even when small outfits can often offer 'better prices'.

If in doubt always read the small print, look for service level agreements and do you research, before parting with your monies.

Thanks for the heads up about that offer on co.uk domains from Siteopia.com Geoff.

Just purchased four co.uk domains with them, saved a bit :-)

How much are the domain renewal fees? cant seem to find them on the site, with a low starting cost you tend to find that the renewal fee to be very high, i will stay with namecheap, used them for years.

Although i offer a domain registration service myself, I would highly recommend heartinternet.co.uk to reg domains, have used over a dozen companies over the years and when problems arise which they always will at somepoint or other there customer service is second to none, and they only make 29p per year on domains, so you cant argue at the price.

I would recommend UK Domain Registration, Email Services, Website Builder - Siteopia I've registered some domains with them following @ventutec advise and they offer some of the lowest registration costs around.

They make nothing on the co.uk domains

The level of service is great too, very friendly on the phone and didn't make me feel useless like some other providers have done when I've needed to contact them. You don't get through to an annoying phone system 'press 1 for this - yada, yada' or passed from department to department. They deal with you there and then on the phone.

Don't know about the renewal costs but with the help and support i've received as long as it's not quadruple the price I'd pay it - hands down.

I guess everyone finds the right provider for them :-)

I value personal service and a tailored approach the most over some other elements.

Everyone will have a difference of opinion and be affiliated with one or other of the companies, just find the right one for you and you can't go far wrong.

I have used domainmonster.com and they still offer the best value for co.uk £2.69 (2 years) and .com £5.99 (1 year) - their support is good too. Anyone else use them?

The have now rolled out hosting recently too but I don't currently use them for hosting.
