The new .co domain is coming
Are you going to be queuing up to secure your .co domain? Is anyone actually excited or even bothered by it?
As a domain registrar perhaps I should be a little more gung-ho about it but I can't help but not be.

What is it? where does it relate to? are they likely to be in the .co.uk or the .tv price range? Should we care?

More info - The .CO era is coming | OFFICIAL Website | .CO Internet SAS
They used to only be able to offer second level tlds so com.co net.co but since the changes to allow more top level extensions they are obviously embracing it.
DD will be updated to register them but we wont be getting involved at sunrise/landrush stage.

I'm signed up to receive updates. Not sure I will take any action until the 'public' phase, although we do have a few projects on the go which I may consider getting into landrush for - probably not, though.
Is there anyone on the forum who is thinking about maybe going for high value ones? e.g product_type_here.co, etc?

Good point Matt I just wonder a) How manic the landrush will be and b) if manic so many people will go for the obvious product_type_here.co is it worth the effort? Lets face it the .com is going to be worth more!

Re: The new .co domain is coming
It's the same hype that surrounded the eu, biz and tv launches. Certainly doesn't float my boat.

Me neither.
.co
Yup, I'm waiting for what's next like they've missed something out. Is it .co.uk or .com?..

Yup.
Although to be fair, there are some clever ".tv" domains around which I wish I'd thought of, because they're very memorable.
Not fussed on .eu, .biz - I mean, just how many different groupings can you have??

I think it's just another way to sell more domain names.

As far as I'm aware at this stage, it's still in its sunrise period. You can try to pre-register for around Ł30 (low priority) or go on to some of the bigger registration sites and attempt to pre-register for about $300 (higher priority). Apparently you can get your money back if you don't get the domain you want.
If you search for .co domains, you'll find that most of the really good generics have already gone. That said, I did manage to find a couple of good ones, which I've tried to reg. (at the low priority fee). I won't lose sleep if I don't get them.
BTW, the domains I did try to pre-reg aren't related to any site I already have. If I already have the .com and/or the co.uk there's no reason for me to want the .co.
That said, I've always been sceptical about .biz and .info, but they're perhaps not so bad after all, so I've taken a little gamble on getting a couple of generic .co domains.
If, and that's a big IF, they're ever going to be worth anything, I predict it will take about two or three years to recover the investment. And don't forget, they aren't cheap, especially when you compare them to a co.uk.
Good luck, stay safe out there, and don't gamble more than you can afford to lose.

I'm waiting for the uk.co subdomains to be released, they'll be more relevant.

Why do you think that? I'd be inclined to think that any xx.xx was less valuable than a .xx

If you are speculating on names, .co may be worth more. But in the uk market people are used to the xx.xx format, so if you want a name to use this seems better.
It will take some time for the public to realise that .co is correct and not type in an m or a .uk after the name.
The Columbians expect it to be a real money-spinner for them.

I wouldn't bother unless I wanted to target Colombia as a market.

^^ what he said.
I think it'll go the same route as "uk.com" and ".eu" domains - i.e. not very popular as ".com" and ".co.uk" domains.
Possibly a good domain for domain "hacks" though - acapul.co anyone? LOL

I capitulated and got the appropriate donkey domains. Mainly to "protect the brand" etc. Got some good ssl ones with I'm going to play with but we'll see if any good.

tes.co is gone too!
Might be worth a few bob down the road if you can get hold of a decent one. One of the single letter ones went for about Ł80k recently, I think overstock bought o.co
