Sounds very nice. Perhaps you could post on here when you get back and tell us all about how your business was able to carry on without you, and give people the confidence to take a break from their own business.

Don't you sometimes feel that all you do with your time off is try to get over tiredness though? It's nice to be able to do something with your time off, and that can be difficult if you feel perpetually tired!

Hello Fishbowl,
The only thing is, it takes me about 2 weeks to catch up, but I'll worry about that when I get back. Yes, I'll give you an update.
Hello again Chris,
I like to have a full day out on Saturdays, so that I feel I've had a day off. When the weather's good, I like to head down to the south coast, Shoreham-by-Sea, Worthing, Brighton, Hastings, Bexhill..., I usually check which has the best forecast first.

I dont think I have had a day off in 3 months and on Friday I got to the point where I was just too tired to concentrate on coding, so I decided there and then to take the weekend off and spend some time with the family (grandson mainly). And I feel a load better for it.

Good for you, "I Love Spreadsheets".

Agreed. Matt's story is enough to show us that.
And what better weather to enjoy some time off in? We all need a break sometimes.

How do I avoid it? Don't sleep!!
Easy really, if you don't sleep how can you miss it??
Ok serious now - middle brat hasn't slept for more than 4 hours in any one slot for 17 years now, so in the days you needed to be awake (ie baby/toddler etc) you got used to sleeping for approx 4/6 hours if you were lucky - so having done it for a lot of years, plus before brats, I did the commute, ie worked in London and was up and about at 5am every morning - so its just something for me I am used to.
I know it sounds strange, but I find a quick power nap in the bath works wonder, and no I don't drown, otherwise, wouldnt be typing this would I??
Its what you get used to - if you are used to sleeping alot, you should carry on that routine as you body will revolt otherwise!

Erm, the phrase tripe springs to mind!!
Ok, so I can't drink, smoke, eat certain foods, sit on my arse all day, have spicy foods, have plain foods, and am now being told I HAVE to get more than 5 hours sleep otherwise I won't like long!
Hell ...

It's amazing how many things we can/can't/should/mustn't do. However, learning from the experience of others is a good way to find out what works for them, and then to adapt that to our own lifestyle.
I think the main lesson to be learned here is that you need to know your own body - if you're too tired, have a rest. Pushing forward regardless can have much more detrimental effects than an afternoon off.

I personally have found it hard to switch off (posting to a forum I've just joined on a Sunday morning case in point!) The advice I've been given about shutting off for a time to allow yourself to relax and then come up with more ideas is easier said than done - especially as I tend to cross one thing off my to do list only to add two things at the bottom.
Speaking from my own experience, I guess the only thing to do is listen to your partner or friends when they glower in your direction and tell you to stop for a while(!)

Hello, Fishbowl. OK, I'm back, and the business is still here. I've just about caught up, and I must say that the team did good!
So, go on, everyone, get those holidays booked!

Hi HDM,
Welcome back! Glad to hear you had a good time and the business survived without you!
What did you put in place to ensure everything went smoothly?
A great lesson for everyone - enjoy your holidays!

I must admit, I do prepare detailed lists of all expected work, to brief all staff that are concerned. But of course a lot comes in that is not predicted, so they're on their own, then.

Again, it seems having a trusted group of employees makes going on holiday so much easier. How do sole traders cope?
