Default Training to be a locksmith

Who does the training for locksmiths and are there any criminal vetting checks for the trainees?

Thats the problem with silly "three week" or "two month" training courses!

I am sure locksmiths-properly trained locksmiths do get vetted.

Anyone can buy a "Bumpkey" though, and this is the problem nowadays, it can get into any barrel lock with a little knock, thus no sign of breaking and entering-thus no insurance pay out! So would you want just anyone being a locksmith?? i think not.

Some of these trade courses need to be banned!!

I trained on a month longt course 5 years ago with the British Locksmiths Association and have been a trading locksmith ever since
They vetted me, and the police have a register they use.
However, There is no Goverment body and no restrictions on becoming a locksmith. just mild restrictions on purchasing tools.
NO locksmith should have a criminal record but who really check?

it's hard to beleive a stricter eye isnt kept on the industy.

most locksmith tools can be bought on-line, however, get caught carrying them and you could get up to 18months in jail for having restricted items on your person.

hope that helps

That's quite an insight, thanks. Do you get people asking you if you're 'accredited' or do they just assume you are?
